GABORONE - South African President Thabo Mbeki has sent a message of congratulation to BDP leader Festus Mogae after he was re-elected Botswana's head of state.

In a telephone conversation with Mogae, Mbeki said: "Please accept, on behalf of the government of South Africa, our congratulations on your re-election as the president of the Republic of Botswana." He added: "As a strong supporter of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU) and the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), your re-election bodes well for the further implementation and consolidation of both the African agenda through AU institutions and NEPAD, as African's socio-economic development programmes, in your country and region." Mbeki said, in line with the decisions of SADC and AU "we are encouraged by the continuously strengthening institutions of democracy throughout the continent".

He added that "the close fraternal relations between the people and the governments of South Africa and Botswana finds expression in the Joint Permanent Commission for Co-operation, which was signed by both ministers of Foreign Affairs in March 2003".

Mbeki told Mogae that "it is within this framework that links between our countries have expanded and filtered down to all levels of our societies", including interactions among government, business, NGOs, academic institutions and ordinary citizens.

Mbeki was re-elected South African president in April for the second time.
