CAPRIVI CONCERNED GROUP SUBMITS PETITION AT SADC HEADQUARTER IN GABORONE, BOTSWANA

We hereby announce that on Friday the 2nd of May 2014 Caprivi Concerned Group (CCG) submitted a petition to SADC in Gaborone, Botswana. The petition addressed to the Executive Secretary of Southern African Development Community (SADC), Her Excellency Dr. Stergomena Lawrence Tax, was received on her behalf by the Head of SADC Public Relations, Ms Leefa Penehupifo Martin.

The petition basically called for SADC intervention in the Caprivi political crisis since the Namibian government have ignored and rejected us. We made it clear in the petition that what is required and all we need is a political dialogue between the United Democratic Party and Namibia to find a lasting solution to the political woes of Caprivians. We will not share the complete petition for now, however, be assured that whatever the feedback from SADC will be, be it negative or positive, we will keep the media and public up to date.

Meanwhile, we take this opportunity to give a directive to our members to boycott upcoming Namibian elections until a political solution is found on the Caprivi high treason trial and the Caprivi political dispute. We are saying our people must not vote as long as our parents and brothers, our countrymen and women are political prisoners or refugees. Namibia is old enough and has the capacity to solve political problems or at least respect human and peoples’ political rights.

CCG also believes that Caprivi is not part of Namibia. Therefore the activities of the Electoral Commission of Namibia are as illegal. This is why our people who share this belief with us must not vote until this political dispute is addressed. It is a human right to protest peacefully, which includes boycotting elections for a genuine reason and without violence.

Thank you.
