TERROR OF GUNSMOKE IN KATIMA MULILO

In a distant past we had written and described that SWAPO and government of Namibia had become anti-western and has chosen to align itself with the communist bloc because of the support they received from them during their liberation struggle. In quoting Mr. Ya-Nangolo’s words we depicted that, at that time they had accommodated a group of people who calls themselves as Islamic or jihadist bandits. Little did people know that such a group had been there to train Namibians about killing their own people and how to inculcate fear among people or societies that seemingly are resistant to SWAPO’s political ideologies.

We also had indicated that, while Namibia had arrested, tortured, and imprisoned Caprivians for fourteen years without fair trial. They were the first to publicly announce their support to the Saharawi political prisoners who were arrested and detained in Morocco. In furtherance of their interests, Namibia requested the UN to put pressure on Morocco to negotiate in good faith and allow for the holding of a referendum in that part of the world. That according to Namibia’s Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Veiccoh Nghiwete could be part of the UN plan for Western Sahara to enable the Saharawi people to exercise their right to self-determination and independence.

Now, the same goes to SWAPO government of Namibia whom for fourteen years have arrested, tortured, and detained Caprivians. The United Nation should put pressure on Namibia to negotiate in good faith and allow for the holding of a referendum in the Caprivi Strip in order to enable the people of the Caprivi to exercise their right to self determination and independence.

Much as the people of the Caprivi Strip are being detained, they also are being victimized to extent that they see no rest and let alone peace under the SWAPO government of Namibia. While they deployed the borrowed apartheid tactic of divide and rule among Caprivians, they also are grabbing land for their own political ends.

We also are learning that of recent a soldier (Ovambo by nationality) stationed at Mpacha base staged a shooting spree in Katima Mulilo where four Caprivian nationals were killed in cold blood and many others were injured with life threatening wounds. Such an act of terror has never surfaced anywhere in the history of the Caprivi and can only be attributed to jihadist groups’ behavior.

It is our conviction that, such an act of terror is a state sponsored terrorism with intent to intimidate Caprivians Nationals. We believe that terrorism come in many forms and ways; it can be a crime, an inexcusable abomination, a justified reaction to oppression, a tactic or strategy. Mostly it depends on whose point of view being represented. It is our belief that such an act was a calculated move to use unlawful force or violence to inculcate fear with intent to coerce or intimidate Caprivians society in pursuit of goals that are political in nature.

Borrowing from the United Nation definition of terrorism, it is an anxiety inspiring method of repeated violent action, employed by clandestine individual, group or state actor, for idiosyncratic, criminal or political reasons, whereby in contrast to assassination, the direct targets of violence are not the main targets, (UN, 1992). What happened in Katima Mulilo recently can only be expressed as the use of violence for purposes of putting the Caprivian public in fear.

The saying that one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter is at play here. SWAPO government had recently sent many security servicemen in the Caprivi Strip and this act of terror is none other than the result of their mission. Simply put, any military action is terrorism by a different name.

Question is what more does the United Nation want to see before they act? How many lives will be lost before the United Nations come to rescue the people of the Caprivi Strip? SWAPO is a bunch of criminals and murderers that does not believe in peaceful settlement to conflicts or disputes. Time is now for the UN not only to act but find a peaceful, logical and lasting solution to the Caprivi Strip case.
