November 4, 2004
President Thabo Mbeki on Wednesday congratulated United States President George Bush on his re-election, saying he was looking forward to continuing working with him to fight poverty and underdevelopment on the world's poorest continent.

"The president is congratulating President George W Bush on his re-election and is congratulating the American people and government on staging yet another successful election," said Mbeki's spokesperson Bheki Khumalo.

"He (Mbeki) is looking forward to continue to work with President Bush to deal with the challenges of poverty and underdevelopment and to continue to co-operate on other bilateral issues," Khumalo said.

"We hope for renewed support for and interest in Africa and the developing world, reform of world institutions, and an era of multilateralism marked by social progress for all," Mbeki was quoted as saying by the South African Press Association.

Mbeki also extended his good wishes to Senator John Kerry.

"Senator Kerry ran a good race, we congratulate him too," he said.
